New rule: 7th through 12 graders need a whooping cough shot

New Law for 2011-2012! 7th through 12th graders need a whooping cough (pertussis) shot before starting the school year.

A new California law requires students to show proof of vaccination before entering school in Fall 2011.

The new requirement affects all students - current, new, and transfers - in public and private schools. The law has two phases:

  • For the 2011-2012 school year, all students entering into 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th or 12th grades will need proof of an adolescent whooping cough booster shot (called "Tdap") before starting school.
  • For 2012-2013 and future school years, all students entering into 7th grade will need proof of a Tdap shot before starting school.

Where to Get Immunizations

The best place to get immunizations is your doctor's office or clinic as part of personal regular health maintenance. Immunizations for children and adults are also available at these locations in Sonoma County.
